hand and face
This is a hand and face study. We are suppose to draw hand and face with expression. This assignment was really fun. I really enjoy the process of doing it. I choose a angry expression. Although I am good at drawing human face it is still a bit challenging because this time we have to add proper emotions in it. I think this is very difficult because I think that drawing expression is not only about drawing techniques. Instead, I have to feel emotion of that character. Otherwise, I won't be able to show anger through my painting honestly.
There are two things I really like in my work: color and form. Sense I am good at using color, I never have a hard time of choosing color. The hard part at this time is chose colors that can emphasis the emotion of the character. I use purple (cold color) as back ground and orange (warm color) as the basic tone of my character. I believe this create a sense of contrast -- cold and warm, purple vs orange (spilt--complimentary color). The second thing I like about this painting is form, especially the face.
Things I don't quiet like about this painting are: composition, and details in hand. I wish there could be some connect with the hand and face. If I somehow draw the arm and upper torso, it might be more of a painting rather than a "practice drawing". I also don't like how I did with the hand. As Zub (my instructor) says, it need more detail, especailly the finger nails. I may also add the finger muscle to strengthen the tension in that hand. Right now, it looks too soft to become an "angry hand".
Anyways, I learned a lot through this project. My ability of analysing forms has been improved. I also find out my weakness.Wish I could become a better painter in the future.

fish drawing
This is the first assignment we did in the begaining of this year. We had to design a fish, and draw it in black and white.
It is not hard but I thought this is the most important piece because digital painting is all about applying color with right values. If the black/white version looks weird, the entire drawing will look awkward.
So I have spend a lot of time analysing the form and how light effect it ...Here is the final work.
line work.
I like how I did with the light and contrast. I applied some principal in air perspective: the things in the front are clear, bright and detailed; the things in the back are blear, dark and less-detailed.
The thing I don't like is the rubbery feel of the skin. I wish it look more like a fish rather than a fish-toy. Maybe I should add some texture. The eye looks a bit plastic, but I am not sure make it more alive.
Anyways, I was really happy because I learned to analysis form in this assignment. I feel a lot more confident when drawing forms after this one, so as I said, this type of practice is really important.

After I drew the fish, I started with basic tone. Then I added layers and layers on top of it to define the form. After that, I put high light and darken the part in shadow. Things I found hard to draw are teeth, fin and eye. The teeth was like a cyllinder, but it was extremely hard to do because the highlight is very subtle and I had to control my brush stroke. The fin was transparent. Sense I was not quiet sure about how to create transparent quality, I had a really bad time when drawing it. The eye was relatively easy. I just had to find some reference photo and paint how the photo looks like.

rat
Here is another drawing I did during this semester. We were suppose to draw a creature with fur. It was really challenging because I had hard time of drawing furs. Eventually, I did two drawings. One of them I don't quiet like. Another is this one.
I like the color choice. (I am really confident about choosing color sense I have a good sense of color.) I wish I used some cool color instead of ward color in the shadow...It may look better...
I also like how I did with the fur. Basically, I used smear tool and hair brushes to build most of the all the fur. It was not very hard because I had to make sure the furs defines the form. Although I did skeletal analysis before I jump into the final painting, it still looks a bit flat because there is no clear sense of lightning and contrast. Another thing I don't like about it that I did not add background, but I have no idea what it should looks like. I may fix it a bit when I got inspiration.
